Proton was incorporated in May 7, 1983 to manufacture, assemble and sell motor vehicles and related products, including accessories, spare parts and other components. The Proton Saga, Malaysian first car was produced by Proton, commercially launched on July 9, 1985 by then Dato' Seri Mahathir Mohamed, the Malaysian Prime Minister, who had originally conceived the idea of a Malaysian Proton.

With solid foundation built over the last 10 years, the automotive manufacturing industry in Malaysia is moving forward with strength. The following are important events that led to the incorporation of PERUSAHAAN Otomobil Nasional Berhad (Proton) and its achievements.
The Proton is a key member of Proton Holdings Berhad, the holding company listed on Bursa Malaysia. The majority of the shares held by a company owned by Khazanah Nasional Berhad state, making the government-linked company (GLC). For over two decades since its inception, this participation is jointly owned by Mitsubishi Motors and Mitsubishi Corp. parent company, each had a stake of 7.93% in Proton until they sold it in March 2004. Mitsubishi disposed of the entire stake in Proton 15.86%, most of which were picked up by Khazanah Nasional, which holds 42.7% share of Proton now.
